What Happens When You Sit Too Long At The Desk

Research has linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns such as increase blood pressure and higher risk of cardiovascular disease.  Sitting in an office chair for prolonged periods of time can also cause low back pain or worsen an existing back problem.  If you must sit for long periods, you need to prop your feet up with a foot rest.

A foot rest may not seem like a primary ergonomic accessory, but it does provide significant benefit. It can ease leg problems and lessen lower back issues. Without the correct support or activity, your feet impact your back, legs, circulation and other areas of the body.  Problems in any of these areas are some of the main reasons for lost productivity in the workplace.

Maintaining correct posture is important.

Your hips should be slightly higher than your knees.

Don’t keep your feet flat on the floor but move them around often.

Use a footrest if there is pressure on the back of the legs or if the feet are not resting on the floor.

Movement Improves Circulation

Sitting or lying for too long with no activity can lead to poor blood circulation. Keeping your feet up on an ergonomic footrest greatly reduces the chances of developing circulatory conditions.

You should change your position as frequently as possible by adjusting your hips, moving your feet, lifting your arms and just slightly altering your posture continuously during your work day. Take frequent breaks like 10 minutes every hour and have a good stretch.

Back Problems

Seated too long in an office chair and improperly positioned feet puts strain on your spine. With a foot rest, you can sit all the way back in the chair and not slouch. This helps to maintain the correct ergonomic angles and will reduce pressure on your spine and back region.

Sitting in a chair without proper support causes poor circulation, back discomfort and overall fatigue.  When you include a foot rest at your workstation, you are increasing the comfort levels, helps maintain correct posture and reducing the risk of injury.
